New aircraft viewing area opening at YVR summer 2009
The Vancouver Airport Authority has announced that a brand new public observation area will open at the new terminal of YVR this summer.
Sadly, the viewing area will not be open air. It will be behind floor to ceiling glass and will face west across the airfield from the terminal out to the Strait of Georgia. Panels will describe airport activity and there will be viewing telescopes. The observation area will be pre-security and the cost to enter will be free. It will be very interesting to see how the observation area looks like when it eventually opens. I think we need to be greatful to the Vancouver Airport Authority for making this reality. How many other airports in the past 20 or 30 years have built aircraft observation areas? I'd say the number is very small.

Instead of opening viewing area, many US airports are closing them. I was
chased by the cops at Philadelphia International Airport last week while taking photos on the side of the road (Hog Island Road south of the airport, parallel to the main runways). There was no NO STOPPING or NO PARKING sign! |
